WASHINGTON (AP) - Troy Wiley scored 18 points and Brian Woodward produced 15
off the bench as Rhode Island won their first Atlantic 10 game, 75-62, over
George Washington on Saturday.
Chris Monroe and Greg Collucci each scored 17 points to lead George
Washington, which started hot but faltered in the second half.
The win breaks a six game losing streak for the Rams (5-12, 1-5), who had
lost 11 of their last 12 entering the game. The Colonials (10-9, 3-5) dropped
their fourth in a row.
Rhode Island chipped away at a seven point halftime deficit and exploded for
an 18-1 run to take a 62-50 lead with just under six minutes remaining while
its defense held George Washington scoreless for more than eight minutes.
The Colonials shot just 23 percent in the second half and could not get
closer than 68-60 with two minutes remaining. The Rams hit nine of 10 free
throws down the stretch to maintain a safe lead.
George Washington's 60 percent shooting created a 40-33 halftime lead. The
40 point output is the most the Colonials have scored all season in the first
half.
However, Rhode Island ruled the boards with a huge 42-27 rebounding
advantage.
