KINGSTON, R.I. (AP) - Shane Laisle kicked a 34-yard field goal in the second
overtime as Rhode Island beat Delaware 17-14 Saturday for its conference win of
the season.
Laisle's winning field goal came after he missed an attempt in the first
overtime that would have given Rhode Island (3-4, 1-3 Atlantic 10) the win.
But Delaware kicker Scott Collins missed field goal attempts in both
overtimes, giving Laisle a second chance to hit the game-winning kick.
Rhode Island tied the game 14-14 on a 1-yard touchdown run by Jayson Davis
with 11:03 remaining, capping a 13-play, 80 yard drive. Delaware (4-4, 2-3) had
taken a 14-7 lead on a pair of first-half touchdown runs from Keith Burnell,
the second a 4-yard scoring play with 1:00 left in the second quarter.
Rhode Island jumped out to a 7-0 lead on the second play from scrimmage when
Davis hit Wendall Williams for a 46-yard touchdown pass.
Andy Hall rushed for 126 yards on 18 carries for Delaware, and Burnell added
67 yards. Davis was 11-of-20 passing for 120 yards and rushed for 56 yards on
29 carries. Williams caught 5 passes for 74 yards and rushed for 43 yards on 4
carries.
