KINGSTON, R.I. (AP) - Freshman quarterback Jayson Davis ran for 194 yards
and three touchdowns Saturday to lead Rhode Island to a 38-28 win over Brown,
overshadowing the record-tying performance of Brown receiver Chas Gessner.
Gessner caught 24 passes to tie Jerry Rice's NCAA record for receptions in a
game.
Gessner had 207 yards receiving and caught two touchdown passes from Kyle
Slager, who was 44-of-59 for a school record 497 yards.
But Rhode Island (1-3) rushed for 451 yards and outscored Brown 21-7 in the
second half to capture the Governor's Cup.
Rhode Island's Wendall Williams snapped a 28-28 tie with a 70-yard touchdown
run late in the third quarter.
Brown (0-3) led 21-20 early in the second half before Davis capped an
80-yard drive with a 1-yard sneak. Brown tied the game 28-28 with 2:53
remaining in the third on a 41-yard pass from Slager to Jammal Grier.
Brown led 14-3 and 21-10 in the first half before Rhode Island rallied
behind Davis.
Rice, who now plays for the Oakland Raiders and holds the NFL records for
career touchdowns and yards from scrimmage, caught 24 passes for Mississippi
Valley State in a game against Southern on Oct. 1, 1983.
The Division 1-AA record for receptions in a season is held by Brown's
Stephen Campbell, who had 120 receptions in 2000. Gessner now has 45 this year.
