HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) - Ryan Cosentino threw three touchdown passes,
including two to Isaac Irby, as Hofstra rolled to a 37-19 victory over Rhode
Island on Saturday.
Cosentino, who was 23-of-38 for 335 yards and no interceptions, also tossed
a 9-yard TD pass to Ricky Bryant. Irby had four catches for 88 yards, and Chris
Onorato kicked field goals of 37, 28 and 31 yards for the Pride (1-1, 1-0
Atlantic 10).
Vemba Bukula had a 44-yard run, the longest scoring play of the game, at
10:35 of the third quarter to give Hofstra a 24-10 lead.
The Rams (1-1, 0-1), who never led, got touchdown runs from quarterback
Jayson Davis and Justin Westley. Davis was 5-of-10 passing for 84 yards.
Following Onorato's 37-yard field goal 1:50 into the game, Cosentino hit
Bryant with a 9-yard pass to make it 10-0 at 2:39 of the opening quarter.
A 31-yard field goal by Shane Laisle at 10:01 of the second cut it to 10-3,
but Cosentino combined with Irby on a 13-yard scoring toss to make it 17-3 at
8:02. Davis' 1-yard run at 2:12 trimmed the margin to 17-10.
Following Bukula's long scoring run, Wesley's 4-yard run at 6:13 of the
third got Rhode Island as close as 24-17. But Cosentino threw a 9-yard TD pass
to Irbe at 3:40 to make it 31-17.
Onorato kicked field goals of 28 and 31 yards to seal the victory.
