Men's Basketball Falls To Lubbock Christian, 74-68

KINGSTON, R.I. (AP) - Jared Fears scored 24 points and added eight assists on Sunday to lead Lubbock Christian to a 74-68 win over Rhode Island in a Las Vegas Tournament game.

Lubbock Christian coach John Copeland called the NAIA school's first victory over an NCAA Division 1 program the biggest win in program history.

Lubbock Christian built a 14-point second half lead, then Fears hit three big 3-pointers as Rhode Island tried to come back.

Fears was 6-of-10 from 3-point range and the team overall was 12-of-26.

Dawan Robinson, who led Rhode Island with 26 points, hit a 3-pointer with 10:50 to play to pull Rhode Island within 54-53, but Fears answered with a 3-pointer.

Mo Turner then hit consecutive baskets to increase the advantage to 61-53. Lubbock Christian didn't make a field goal over the final 4:09, but held on for the win.

Trailing 72-59 after a dunk by Brandon Jones, Robinson scored nine straight points to get Rhode Island within 72-68 with 1:27 to play. Rhode Island had the ball trailing by four several times in the final 1:27 of play, but missed two foul shots and couldn't connect from the field.

Lubbock Christian jumped to a 11-0 lead and Rhode Island opened the game by hitting just one of its first nine shots. A 3-pointer by Brandon Jones (13 points) with 5:17 to play gave Lubbock Christian its biggest lead of the first half, 33-15.

Rhode Island put together a 6-0 run on three straight fast break baskets to pull within 35-26 with 1:51 left in the first half and Lubbock Christian led 38-28 at the break.
