LAS VEGAS (AP) - Dawan Robinson had a game-high 16 points and five assists
Wednesday in leading Rhode Island past Louisiana Monroe 78-46 in the final day
of the Las Vegas Tournament.
The Rams won the Las Vegas Tournament championship with a 3-1 record, taking the tiebreaker over Miami because of the Rams 54-53 victory against the Hurricanes on Tuesday night. It was the first in-season tournament win for Rhode Island since 1991, when the Rams won the MVP Classic in Toledo.
Rhode Island led 31-27 at the half, but broke the game open in the second half, outscoring Louisiana Monroe 47-19 and limiting the Indians to 8-of-27 shooting. The Rams went on an 18-4 run over the first five minutes of the half and held Louisiana-Monroe (0-4) to 11 points over the game's final 10 minutes.
The 32-point margin of victory was the largest since a 110-72 win over Fordham on Feb. 11, 1997.
Dustin Hellenga added 12 points and six rebounds and Brian Woodward had 11 points for the Rams.
John Andrews and Chavis Thompson each scored 10 for Louisiana-Monroe.
Rhode Island (3-1) returns to action on Sunday with a match-up against defending national champion Syracuse at the Carrier Dome.
