Rhode Island Falls to William & Mary, 31-24

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (AP) - Elijah Brooks scored on a 2-yard run to break a 24-24 tie with 8:03 remaining and William & Mary stopped Rhode Island on downs on its last two possessions Saturday, preserving the Tribe's 31-24 victory.

Lang Campbell threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score for William & Mary (5-1, 3-0 Atlantic 10), which won despite being outgained 409-289. Campbell's scoring passes both covered 3 yards to Matt Trinkle in the opening quarter.

Rhode Island (3-3, 1-2) drove to the Tribe's 26 with 4:19 left before being stopped on fourth down. The Rams got the ball back on their own 26 with 2:12 left, but gained just 6 yards in six plays and the Tribe ran out the final 1:11.

Brooks led the Tribe with 54 yards on 12 carries. His touchdown run capped a 60-yard march downfield after Jayson Davis' 1-yard touchdown run had pulled the Ranms even.

Davis also scored on a 6-yard run, and threw a 52-yard touchdown pass to James Hills for the first points of the game. He was 6-for-12 passing for 127 yards.

Jason Ham led the Rams with 106 rushing yards on 32 carries. Calvin Poole added 73 on eight attempts, and Davis gained 65 on 19 attempts.

Campbell was 20-for-27 for 192 yards for the Tribe, which has won five in a row since a season-opening loss to Division I-A North Carolina.
