Rhode Island Falls to Villanova, 48-9

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R. I. (AP) - Marvin Burroughs passed for two touchdowns and ran for another, leading Villanova to a 48-9 win at Rhode Island on Saturday.

Villanova (6-3, 3-3 Atlantic 10) recovered six of Rhode Island's 10 fumbles, reeling off 48 unanswered points to run away with the win.

Villanova's first two scores capitalized on Rhode Island fumbles. A recovery deep in Rhode Island territory led to Burroughs' 4-yard touchdown run, and Darrell Adams returned another fumble 15 yards for a TD with 3:41 left in the first quarter.

Calvin Gibson added 102 yards rushing and a touchdown for Villanova.

In the second quarter, Burroughs connected with John Dieser on a 39-yard scoring pass and offensive lineman Christian Gaddis recovered a Villanova fumble and ran three yards for a score. That gave Villanova a 27-6 halftime lead.

Rhode Island (4-4, 2-3) scored on Calvin Poole's 14-yard touchdown run in the first and a Colin Gallagher field goal late in the fourth.

D.J. Porter gained 51 yards on 23 carries for Rhode Island.

Villanova finished with 483 yards of total offense on the day to 236 for Rhode Island.
