SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) - Chris Markwood had 14 points and Joe Campbell hit a pair of free throws with 2:35 to play to put Maine ahead for good as the Black Bears beat Rhode Island 47-44 on Friday night.

Rhode Island (1-2) missed a 3-pointer with one second to play that would have tied the game.

Both teams struggled from the floor in a close game throughout that featured 13 lead changes.

Maine (1-2) shot 28 percent (15-for-53) in the game while the Rams were even worse at 24 percent (12-for-51).

Kevin Reed added 11 points for the Black Bears.

Terrence Mack was the only Rhode Island player in double figures with 12 points. Scott Hazelton, the Rams leading scorer who averaged 22.5 points in the team's first two games, was held to six points on 1-for-13 shooting.
