Rhody's Bid For Third-Straight Win Vs. Providence Falls Short In 65-58 Overtime Loss

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Ryan Gomes scored 20 of his 25 points after halftime, sparking Providence to a 65-58 overtime win over Rhode Island on Saturday.

Tuukka Kotti added 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Friars (5-3). Scott Hazelton scored 25 points on 9-of-24 shooting and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead Rhode Island (1-5).

With Providence trailing 46-40 with five minutes left, Gomes scored 10 of the Friars' final 13 points to help force overtime.

Providence took a 52-50 lead with a minute left on Dwight Brewington's dunk. But Hazelton tied the score with 5.7 seconds left. The Friars outscored URI 12-5 in overtime, as Brewington scored seven points and Gomes added five.

Providence, leading 24-22 at halftime, took a 29-22 lead to begin the second half. Then the Rams went on a 16-6 run highlighted by a four-point play by Hazelton, giving the Rams their first lead, 38-35, with 12:15 remaining in regulation.

Marcel Momplaisir added 11 points for Rhode Island. Brewington scored 11 points and Randall Hanke added 12 for Providence.
