TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The 20th-ranked Arizona State soccer team (1-1) took control of the match from the start and never let up as they scored three first half goals in a span of just 11 minutes en route to a 4-0 shutout on Sunday at the Nike Seminole Classic. The Sun Devils spread around the scoring as four different players recorded goals. Rhode Island goalkeeper Ria Carroll (Warwick, R.I.) made eight saves in net, but was kept busy all game as the Sun Devils bombarded her with 25 shots. The Devils started strong as they peppered Carroll with nine shots in the first 25 minutes of play. ASU then broke through at the 27:05 mark when Manya Makoski drilled a shot at Carroll, who blocked the ball, but couldn't control it as a charging Elizabeth Bogus collected the rebound and put it in the net for her first tally of the season. The Devils kept their relentless pace up as Makoski elevated ASU to a 2-0 lead in the 34th minute. Kelley Bond fed a breaking Makoski, who slid to the ball just before the URI goalkeeper could get it, then colleted it and scored. Just a minute later Brittany Cooper had a shot that was saved, while another minute later Courtney Crane hit the post and got the rebound back and shot again only to see Carroll block the shot. Only four minutes later in the 39th minute, ASU took control as Cooper did break through, nailing a low shot that went far post for the 3-0 lead. In the second half, the Devils continued the pressure, tallying their fourth and final goal in the 57th minute. Junior Katie Leahy, who hails from Warwick, Rhode Island and was two-time first-team All-American in her two seasons at the Community College of Rhode Island, recorded her first career goal as a Sun Devils as she headed the ball to the back post. Stephanie Ebner was credited with the assist. Senior goalkeeper Kelly Fitzgerald posted the shutout, her 11th career, making five saves. The Rams return to action on Saturday against American at the James Madison Invitational at 11 a.m.
