Football Falls At New Hampshire, 53-9

DURHAM, N.H. - Rhode Island freshman running back Jimmy Hughes ran for a career-high 118 yards but it was New Hampshire shutting down the Rams, 53-9, Saturday in Atlantic 10 football acttion in Durham.

Ricky Santos threw four touchdown passes to lead New Hampshire (5-1, 3-1). Corey Graham returned the opening kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown as the UNH offense scored seven touchdowns on 10 first-half possessions and outgained the Rams 501-232 yards.

Santos finished the game 12-for-13 for 134 yards with touchdown strikes to David Ball, Michael Boyle, Jon Williams and Matt Henry. Santos also rushed for 33 yards on six carries, and Boyle scored another touchdown on a 71-yard punt return.

New Hampshire led 34-0 in the second quarter before a 29-yard field goal by Rhode Island's (3-4, 1-3) Colin Gallagher. On Rhode Island's next possession, UNH's Mark Rutberg forced a fumble, Baron Flenory picked up the ball at the UNH 20-yard line and scored a touchdown to make it 41-3.

Trailing 47-3 at halftime, URI scored a touchdown on a 2-yard run by Andrew Varner and failed on a 2-point conversion. UNH closed the game scoring on 14-yard pass play from Bruce Elia to Evan Loring in the third quarter.
