CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Rhode Island women's soccer lost its first conference game in its last game of the regular season, 3-2 at Charlotte on Sunday. Despite the loss, the Rams remain the number two seed for the Atlantic 10 tournament, which begins Thurs. (Nov. 3) in Dayton, Ohio.
Rhode Island (10-5-2, 6-1-1 A-10) senior forward Melanie Kasparek scored her 13th goal of the season in the 46th minute of the game. Sunday's goal moved Kasparek two points away from being URI's all-time point's leader and six goals away from being the all-time goal scorer.
Charlotte (10-8-0, 6-3-0 A-10) scored the first goal of the game, 16 minutes into the first half when Lindsey Beam found the back of the net off a free kick.
Ten minutes and 25 seconds into the second half, Charlotte took a 2-1 advantage on a goal from Nikki Dumencich. Brittany Dorsch scored her third goal of the season to put the 49ers up 3-1 with less than ten minutes left in the game.
With one minute and 30 seconds left in regulation URI senior forward Kayla Reels hit a goal from 40-yards out to bring the score to within one.
Rhode Island receives a bye for the first round of the A-10 Conference Tournament and will play in the second round at 8:00 p.m. on Friday (Nov. 4). The tournament begins Thursday (Nov.3) at Baujan Field with a face-off between #3 Charlotte and #6 Duquesne at 5:30 p.m. followed at 8:00 p.m. by #4 Dayton and #5 Saint Joseph's.
