ORONO, Maine (AP) - Quarterback Ron Whitcomb scored on a 1-yard run on fourth down in overtime to give Maine a 27-24 win over Rhode Island on Saturday.
The Rams (4-6, 2-5 Atlantic 10) rallied from a 21-10 third quarter deficit to tie the game at 21-21 with just over a minute to play in regulation when Colin Gallagher kicked a 30-yard field goal.
Gallagher hit a 36-yarder on Rhode Island's overtime possession to give the Rams a 24-21 lead.
Instead of going for the tie on fourth town, Maine (5-5, 3-4) went for the win and Whitcomb followed his left guard into the end zone.
Whitcomb was 23 of 43 for a season-high 286 yards, including a 6-yard pass to Kevin McMahan at 10:15 of the third quarter that gave the Black Bears a 21-10 lead.
The Rams pulled within 21-18 on Jerrell Jones' 5-yard touchdown run and Jayson Davis' two-point conversion rush with 5:55 to play.
Montell Owens rushed for a career-high 160 yards on 26 carries and two touchdowns for the Black Bears. McMahan had six receptions for 93 yards.
Joe Casey ran for 98 yards and a touchdown for the Rams.
Maine led 7-3 at halftime.
