SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) - Alex Broomfield's 25-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Anthony Orio proved to be the margin of victory as Northeastern topped Rhode Island 17-14 on Saturday.

Broomfield's reception capped a five-play 54-yard drive with 1:08 remaining in the third quarter for the Huskies (2-9, 2-6 Atlantic 10).

Northeastern's Miro Kesic booted a 44-yard field goal late in the first half, snapping a 7-7 tie.

Maurice Murray, who ran for 116 yards on 22 carries, had opened the scoring for Northeastern with a 16-yard run.

The Rams (4-7, 2-6 A-10) answered with Joe Casey's four-yard touchdown run with 13:08 left in the second quarter.

Casey gave the Rams a 14-10 lead midway through the third quarter with his second touchdown of the day, from three yards out. Casey finished with 76 yards on 26 carries.

The Rams' Jeff West led all rushers with 179 yards on 18 rushes. Rhode Island finished with 436 yards of total offense.

Orio completed 8 of 21 passes in the win. Rhode Island freshman backup quarterback Derek Cassidy, starting his first game of the season, completed 7 of 14 for 105 yards.
