SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) - Jayson Davis and Chad Campbell each ran for two touchdowns as Rhode Island opened its season on Saturday with a 34-20 win over Fordham.
Rhode Island (1-0) compiled 525 yards of total offense, including 387 yards on the ground, led by Calvin Poole with 104.
Rhode Island led 12-10 at halftime, but Fordham (0-1) took a 13-12 lead early in the third quarter after Micah Clukey kicked a 32-yard field goal.
Davis, the quarterback, scored on a 2-yard run at 7:05 of the third quarter and on a 16-yard run at 13:39 of the fourth as Rhode Island took a 27-13 lead.
Campbell scored on a 9-yard run in the first quarter and a 2-yard run with 2:00 to play in the fourth to complete a 17-play, 80-yard drive.
Fordham backup quarterback Matthew Fullam replaced starter Derric Daniels midway through the fourth quarter and fired a 37-yard touchdown strike to Mike Melvin to close the deficit to 27-20 with 9:06 to play.
Rhode Island kicker Colin Gallagher kicked a school-record 51-yard field goal with 9:15 remaining in the opening quarter.
