WASHINGTON D.C. - The Rhode Island men's soccer team recorded its first shutout victory of the season with a 2-0 win at George Washington Sunday, October 1. With the win, Rhody improves to 5-3-3 overall (2-0-0 A-10) while GW drops to 4-5-1 and 1-1-0 in the A-10.
Rhode Island was dominant throughout the first half, taking 11 shots while limiting the Colonials to just five - none of which were on goal. In the 40th minute, senior Jeffrey Gonsalves (Markham, Ontario) put the Rams on the board when he thighed in junior Steve Mellen's (North Kingstown, R.I.) header cross from the right side of the net. Junior Danleigh Borman (Cape Town, South Africa), who found Mellen with a service from the left side, also was credited with an assist on the goal.
GW applied a more aggressive attack in the second half and managed to fire off 13 shots. However, junior Dawid Badecki (Jalenia Gora, Polamnd) put the game away for URI in the 68th minute when sent a cross from classmate Lukasz Tumicz (Bisztynek, Poland) into the left corner of the net for his second goal in as many games.
Freshman Chris Pennock (Middlesborough, England) was solid in net for URI, stopping all five shots on goal for his second shutout of the season. George Washington's Greg Yarh made seven saves for the Colonials.
Rhode Island (5-3-3, 2-0-0 A-10) returns to action on Friday, October 6, when it travels to Xavier (4-6-0, 1-0-0 A-10) for a 7:00 p.m. match against the Muskateers.
