KINGSTON, R.I. - The Rhode Island men's soccer team cruised to a 6-1 win over Saint Joseph's on Sunday afternoon, October 15. The Hawks scored first, and held onto the 1-0 lead for just 19 seconds before Rhody went on to score six unanswered goals en route to its third-consecutive win.
Saint Joseph's got things started just 7:28 into the game when Michael McInaw sent a loose ball into the open net after URI's Chris Pennock (Middlesborough, England) got tied up outside of the goal area. The Rams responded just 19 seconds later when junior Dawid Badecki (Jelenia Gora, Poland) sent a pass from senior Jeffrey Gonsalves (Markham, Ontario) into the left corner of the net for the equalizer.
Junior Geoffrey Cameron (Attleboro, Mass.) tallied what would prove to be the game-winning goal at the 20:03 mark when he headed a cross from junior Lukasz Tumicz (Bisztynek, Poland) past Saint Joseph's Bryan Benedict. A minute and a half later, Gonsalves snuck another header by Benedict, this time off a free kick from junior Danleigh Bornam (Cape Town, South Africa).
Gonsalves struck again in the second half, netting his league-leading thirteenth goal of the season at the 61:45 mark, after receiving a breakaway pass from junior Steve Mellen (North Kingstown, R.I.). Senior Joe Spofford (Waterville, Maine) notched his first goal of the season in the 80th minute when he took advantage of a defensive error by the Hawks and sent the ball into the back of the net for the 5-1 lead. Sophomore Kedan Crosby (St. James, Trinidad) scored Rhody's sixth and final goal of the game when he headed a volley from senior B.J. Kochis (Naugatuck, Conn.) into the net with two and a half minutes remaining on the clock.
In all, URI outshot Saint Joseph's, 21-3, including a 12-1 advantage in the first half. Pennock and redshirt junior Mark Sauter (Columbus, Ohio) combined for two saves for Rhody while Benedict recorded six stops for the Hawks.
