KINGSTON, R.I. - The Rhode Island women's soccer team fell to in-state rival Brown, 4-2, on Senior Day at the URI Soccer Complex. Junior Deb Nelson (Chepachet, R.I.) netted both goals for the Rams, her eighth and ninth of the season.
Brown was quick to open the scoring, getting on the board just six minutes into the game when Kathryn Moos, the reigning Ivy League Player of the Week, sent a centering pass from Lindsay Cunningham past URI's Amanda Thomas (State College, Pa.). Rhode Island countered with a goal of its own at the 16:56 mark when junior Thorunn Jonsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland) played a loose ball into the left corner where freshman Kassandra Spitler (Montoursville, Pa.) found Nelson wide open in front of the net. Nelson evened things, 1-1, with her eighth goal of the season. She struck again, less than ten minutes later, taking a Jonsdottir pass in for a one-on-one with Brown goalkeeper Brenna Hogue. Nelson tapped the ball to around Hogue and into the net for a 2-1 Rams lead.
With less than five minutes remaining in the half, Moos tied things up for the Bears when she blasted a penalty kick into the top right corner of the net to even the score, 2-2.
The second half was all Brown, as the Bears outshot the Rams, 9-4, and scored two more goals. At the 66:52 mark, Moos completed her hat-trick performance on a cross from Melissa Kim. The goal would prove to be the game-winner for Brown, but Moos wasn't done there. She went on seal the victory when she set up Cunningham for the Bears' fourth goal of the game at 84:35.
For the game, URI's Thomas made four saves while Hogue had six for Brown.
The Rams (9-8-0, 5-1-0 A-10) return to action on Sunday, October 22, when they travel to Massachusetts for a 1:00 p.m. match against the Minutewomen (10-4-0, 4-2-0 A-10).
