Oct. 8, 2006

Box Score

DAYTON, Ohio - The Rhode Island men's soccer team recorded its second shutout victory of the season with a 2-0 win at Dayton on Sunday, October 8. Freshman Chris Pennock (Middlesborough, England) picked up his second shutout of the season while senior Jeffrey Gonsalves recorded both goals for the Rams. With four points on the day, Gonsalves passed former Rhody standout and now assistant coach Gareth Elliott on the All-Time Points list to tie Sasha Gotsmanov (2001-04) for fifth with 89 career points (35 goals, 19 assists).

Gonsalves netted his first goal at the 29:56 mark when he scored off a shot from about four yards out. Juniors Callum Bissett (Pencaitland, Scotland) and Dawid Badecki (Jalenia Gora, Poland) both were credited with assists on the goal.

Less that eight minutes into the second half, Gonsalves struck again for the Rams, this time taking a breakaway feed from sophomore Kevin Hamill (Easton, Conn.) into the box from about 40 yards out. With just 15 yards between him and the goal, Gonsalves fired a shot that went past Dayton goalkeeper Nick Tarkany and into the back of the net for the 2-0 Rhode Island lead.

In all, Rhode Island outshot Dayton, 15-13, while the Flyers out-cornered the Rams, 5-2. Pennock made a total of five saves for Rhody and Tarkany had six stops for Dayton.

The Rams (6-4-3, 3-1-0 A-10) are back in action on Friday, October 13, when they return to the URI Soccer Complex to host Temple at 7:00 p.m. The outing against the Owls will be the first match of a six-game homestand for the Rams, who will close out the regular season at home after playing 10 of their last 13 games on the road.
