CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The second-seeded Rhode Island men's soccer team posted a 1-0 win over third-seeded Richmond on Friday night, November 3. Freshman goalkeeper Chris Pennock (Middlesborough, England) picked up his third shutout of the season, advancing URI to Sunday's championship game, where the Rams will defend their championship title against top-seeded Saint Louis at 1:00 p.m.
Rhody took the early lead when junior Danleigh Borman (Cape Town, South Africa) sent an unassisted shot past Richmond's Eric Sciocchetti at the 12:15 mark.
"Danleigh played really well for us tonight," Head Coach John O'Connor said. "All of our guys looked good out there. Pennock was great in net, not necessarily making a lot of saves, but his positioning and kicks were good and he did a great job controlling play in our defensive end."
The Rhody defense gave Pennock a lot of help, limiting Richmond to just three shots on goal, all of which came in the second half. For the game, the Rams held an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal. Rhode Island also out-cornered Richmond by a 6-3 margin.
With the win, URI is set to face first-seeded Saint Louis on Sunday afternoon.
"They're a great team," O'Connor added. "They battled Duquesne to a 1-0 win earlier today. It was a fast-paced and physical game but they'll be ready to play on Sunday. And we'll be ready too. It will be a good game."
