Junior Dave Savard registered two hits and drove in three runs as the Rams (3-2) defeated Michigan State (4-6) 7-4 on Saturday. Sophomore Zach Zaneski went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored.
The Rams found themselves in their first extra-inning game of the 2006 season after a ninth inning run by the Spartans tied the game, 4-4. Rhode Island answered with three runs of its own in the top of the 10th inning to put the game out of reach. The 10th-inning surge started with a Daryl Holcomb walk followed by a pair of singles by Zaneski and sophomore Mike O'Malley which scored Holcomb. Savard later doubled to score both Zaneski and O'Malley.
Sophomore Shaun Hagey had two hits on four at-bats with an RBI and a run scored while O'Malley finished with one hit, one run and one RBI, all of which came in the 10th inning.
Sophomore Jamie Degidio got the win for the Rams pitching two and two-thirds innings giving up only three hits and striking out four, while Senior Tom Venedam received his first save of the season.
The Rams return to action on Sunday when they will take on Iona in Palm Beach, Fla.
