MIAMI - Rhode Island fell victim to a late-innings surge by Florida International en route to a 11-2 loss in Miami, late Monday night. Tied 1-1 entering the bottom of the seventh, the Golden Panthers plated 10 runs in the final two innings to pick up the victory.
Rhode Island came to the plate in the top of the sixth inning trailing 1-0. Sophomore third baseman Shaun Hagey, who led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a single by sophomore catcher Zach Zaneski, scored on a throwing error by the FIU first baseman to tie the game, 1-1.
The Rams (4-3) had only allowed five hits through six innings before FIU broke the game open with a five-run seventh that included two home runs.
Rhode Island would add one more run in the eighth inning as junior right fielder Scott Brown scored from second on a throwing error by the FIU shortstop to make the score 5-2.
The Golden Panthers would put the game away with five more runs in the bottom of the eighth en route to their ninth-straight victory.
Sophomore Brett Palanski took the loss, yielding eight hits and five runs through 6 1/3 innings.
Rhode Island will be back in action twice on Tuesday, taking on Columbia at 1:00 p.m., before a 4:00 p.m. showdown with Iona.
