Baseball Overpowers Northeastern, 15-4

KINGSTON, R.I. - University of Rhode Island sophomore catcher Zach Zaneski went 3-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored in the Rams' 15-4 victory over Northeastern on Wednesday at Bill Beck Field. Rhode Island (12-5) scored 15 runs on 16 hits compared to the Huskies' four runs on 10 hits. Northeastern (9-9) got on the board quick with one run in the first inning and two more in the second, but couldn't fend of the Rams, which scored three runs in each of the first, third, fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

Junior first baseman Ryan Cunningham also had three hits for the Rams to go along with a RBI and two runs scored. Cunningham's infield single in the first scored senior left fielder Daryl Holcomb to start things off for URI. Sophomore third baseman Shaun Hagey and junior right fielder Scott Brown\also scored in the first to give the Rams a 3-1 lead which they never lost. Hagey finish the game with a hit and a run scored while Brown finished with a hit and two runs scored.

Senior second baseman Wayne Russo went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored while junior centerfielder Dave Savard also had a pair of hits, two RBI and a run scored.

Sophomore Jamie Degidio earned the win for Rhode Island, giving up eight hits in six innings pitched while striking out four. Sophomore Matthew Bruderek came on in relief in the seventh, pitching two innings and only allowing one hit while striking out three. Senior captain Tom Venedam closed the game striking out two.

The Rams return to action this weekend when they head to our nation's capital to take on George Washington in a three-game series on Friday (3:00 p.m.), Saturday (1:00 p.m.) and Sunday (12:00 p.m.).
