Sept. 10, 2006

Stats

CAMBRIDGE, MASS. - The Rhode Island men's soccer team tied Northeastern, 1-1, at the Harvard Invitational on September 10. Junior Lukasz Tumicz (Bisztynek, Poland) scored the Rams' only goal.

After a scoreless first half, Tumicz got the Rams on the board at the 64:02 mark when he redirected junior Geoffrey Cameron's (Attleboro, Mass.) free kick past Northeastern's Mohmoud Talaat. The Huskies responded just six minutes later when Kyle Nasman blasted a shot past URI's freshman goalkeeper Chris Pennock (Middlesborough, England) to even things up at 1-1.

Northeastern almost netted a go-ahead goal two minutes later but URI sophomore Kevin Hamill (Easton, Conn.) was able to clear the ball just before it crossed the goal line. With two minutes left in regulation, Talaat robbed the Rams of what could have been the game-winner when he made a diving save on a header by Tumicz. He also senior stopped Jeffrey Gonsalves' (Markham, Ontario) attempt with just 37 seconds left on the clock.

Rhode Island's best chance at putting the game away came in the second overtime when junior Dawid Badecki (Jelenia Gora, Poland) send a header off the near post and followed with another header which went just wide of the net.

In all, Rhody outshot the Huskies by a 25-8 margin, including a 14-3 advantage in the second half and a 3-0 advantage in the second overtime.

With the tie, URI posted a 0-1-1 record in the Harvard Invitational. Cameron and freshman Domenic Petrarca (Providence, R.I.) both were named to the All-Tournament team. In two games, Cameron recorded a goal and an assist and led the team with 12 shots. Petrarca was part of a back line that allowed a total of just seven shots on goal in games against Northeastern and Loyola Marymount.

The Rams (1-2-2) return to action next weekend when they travel to Amherst, Mass. for the UMass Tournament. URI is set to face Vermont at 4:00 p.m. on Friday the 15th and Hartford at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday the 17th.
