Sept. 15, 2006

Box Score

AMHERST, Mass. - On Friday, September 15, the Rhode Island men's soccer team defeated Vermont, 3-2, at the University of Massachusetts's Rudd Field. Senior Jeffrey Gonsalves (Markham, Ontario) scored the Rams' first two goals and assisted on the game-winner.

After a scoreless first half, Vermont was first to get on the board when Jordan Crasilneck snuck a shot into the right corner of the net from 10 yards out at 53:51. Rhode Island responded four minutes later when Gonsalves found the back of the net on passes from juniors Geoffrey Cameron (Attleboro, Mass.) Lukasz Tumicz (Bisztynek, Poland).

Gonsalves put URI up, 2-1, at the 68:16 mark when he sent a pass from Tumicz past UVM's Roger Scully. For Gonsalves, the goal marked his team-leading third tally.

Just two minutes later, Gonsalves caused a Vermont turnover and fed the ball to Tumicz who netted a breakaway goal, which proved to be the game-winner. The Catamounts' Corey Bronner went on to get the ball past Rhody's redshirt junior goalkeeper Mark Sauter (Columbus, Ohio) on a free kick from 25 yards out at 70:41, but that was the final goal UVM would score, as Rhode Island went on to post its first victory since a season-opening 2-1 win over Providence.

In all, URI outshot Vermont, 13-6, and held a 7-4 corner kick advantage.

The Rams (2-2-2) return to action on Sunday, September 17 when they face Hartford at 12:00 p.m. and UMass' Rudd Field.
