Men's Soccer Ties Hartford, 1-1, To Win UMass Invitational

Sept. 17, 2006

Box Score

AMHERST, Mass. -

The Rhode Island men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with Hartford in the final day of the UMass Invitational in Amherst, Mass. Rhody became the tournament champion after 22nd-ranked Massachusetts fell to Vermont, 1-0, later in the afternoon.

The Rams and the Hawks each took three shots in the first half, but the Rhody was the only team to capitalize, as senior Jeffrey Gonsalves (Markham, Ontario) sent an unassisted shot past Hartford's Matt Glaeser and into the right corner of the net at the 27:40 mark.

URI controlled play through much of the second half, taking 11 shots to Hartford's 6 and holding a 4-0 advantage on corners. Despite their efforts, the Rams were unable to keep Hartford off the board as Matthew Vinci knotted things up, 1-1, when he sent a cross past freshman goalkeeper Chris Pennock (Middlesborough, England) at 64:48.

That would be all the scoring the game would see, as neither team was able to find the back of the net through two overtimes.

In all, URI outshot Hartford, 18-12, and out-cornered the Hawks, 6-1. Pennock made a career-high six saves for Rhode Island.

Four Rams were named to the All-Tournament Team: Senior Jeffrey Gonsalves (three goals, one assist), junior Lukasz Tumicz (one goal, two assists) redshirt senior Kevin Algozer and sophomore Adam Howarth.

The men's soccer team (2-2-3) returns to action on Wednesday, September 20 when they travel to Boston University for a 7:00 p.m. game against the 19th-ranked Terriers (4-1-3).
