Oct. 21, 2007

Box Score

ST. LOUIS - Junior Kedan Crosby (St. James, Trinidad) tallied his second goal of the season as the Rhode Island men's soccer team was defeated, 3-1, at No. 12/11 Saint Louis, Sunday afternoon, Oct. 21. Senior Lukasz Tumicz (Bisztynek, Poland) recorded a game-high seven shots in the loss.

Tumicz nearly put Rhody on the board with the first strike of the match as his shot went over Saint Louis goalkeeper Ross Kaufman and deflected off the crossbar just 55 seconds in.

However, it was the Billikens that tallied first, in the 25th minute, when Scott Wisniewski grabbed a loose ball and blasted a shot past URI sophomore goalkeeper Chris Pennock (Middlesborough, England) from 25 yards out for the 1-0 lead. SLU stretched its lead to two before the end of the half with an unassisted goal from Beau Bellomy with less that five minutes remaining on the clock.

"We made two mistakes in the first half," said head coach John O'Connor. "And unfortunately, both of those mistakes coast us goals. I thought we threatened well though, and created a couple of quality chances."

Crosby cut the Saint Louis lead in half in the 65th minute, sending a Tumicz rebound to the upper right corner to bring the score to 2-1.

The Billikens put the game out of reach at the 78:57 mark when Wisniewski found Jimmy Holmes, who dribbled in and beat Pennock with a shot from short range.

For the game, URI outshot SLU, 17-10, including a 9-4 edge in shots on goal. Saint Louis held an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks.

With the loss, Rhody drops to 4-7-2 overall (2-1-1 Atlantic 10) while the Billikens improve to 7-2-3 (3-1-0 Atlantic 10).

The Rams are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 27, when they travel to Massachusetts for a 1:00 p.m. match against the Minutemen (8-5-0, 3-1-0 A-10).
