CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Dora Larusdottir's goal just two minutes into the match proved to be the difference, as Rhode Island held on for a 1-0 win at Charlotte this afternoon.
The junior from Reykjavik, Iceland found the back of the net on a shot from about 30 yards out. The blast went over Charlotte goalkeeper Lauren Brown and into the upper right corner for the game's only score.
"We played very well and both team's battled and competed. I think the team took a big step forward at a crucial point of the season, I couldn't be prouder." head coach Zac Shaw said. "It is always tough to win on the road and coming into today's match, Charlotte had not lost in Atlantic 10 action. So with that, combined with their senior day and the emotions that come into play, this was an outstanding win for us."
The unassisted goal was Larusdottir's ninth of the season.
Rhody outshot the 49ers, 14-11, while Charlotte attempted four corner kicks to URI's one. For the Rams, goalkeeper Jackie Fede tallied her sixth shutout of the season. She stopped six shots in goal this afternoon, while her counterpart Lauren Brown made five saves while allowing the one score.
With the win, Rhody improves to 11-5-2 overall on the season and 5-3-1 in A-10 play. The Rams close out the 2007 regular season at home, hosting George Washington on Friday, Nov. 2 at 5 p.m. and Richmond on Sunday, Nov. 4 at noon.
