KINGSTON, R.I. - Paced by 18 points from Will Daniels - and five players scoring in double figures - Rhode Island rolled over Providence, 77-60, in the annual matchup of the two local teams.
Daniels was 8-of-15 from the floor, while also pulling down nine rebounds and blocking three shots in 34 minutes of action.
The senior forward got Rhode Island off to a 3-0 lead on a deep three to start the game, as the home team got out to a quick lead. But it was a first half of runs.
After PC's Dwain Williams tied the ballgame at 7-7, Rhody rattled off seven unanswered points - capped by a thunderous alley-oop dunk from Jimmy Baron to Lamonte Ulmer. That made the score 14-7 with 12:46 to go.
But the Friars would fight back, outscoring URI 17-7 over the next 7:40, to take a 24-21 lead with 5:05 to go. The home team would respond, closing the period on a 12-4 push - capped by another Daniels trey - to take a 33-28 lead at the half.
In the second half, both teams traded baskets early on before Kahiem Seawright keyed a 9-0 push that put Rhode Island ahead by 12 points - 44-32 - with 15:31 left in regulation. The Friars would get as close as five points - at 46-41 with 12:31 to go - but a combination of a potent offense and lock-down defense would help put the game away.
Rhody would force six turnovers over the last 11 minutes, while connecting on 8-of-12 from the floor, to build as much as a 20-point advantage late.
Baron scored 17 points, connecting on three trifectas, to go along with five rebounds, four assists and two steals in 31 minutes. Seawright tallied his second consecutive double-double in points and rebounds, registering 13 points and 10 boards, while Parfait Bitee recorded 11 points, nine assists, five rebounds and two steals. Keith Cothran came off the bench to add 11 points in 22 minutes.
With the win - its fourth straight - URI improves to 9-1 on the season. The Rams head to Syracuse on Saturday, Dec. 8 to face the Orange at the Carrier Dome. Tipoff time is set for 7 p.m. and will be televised live on Cox Sports Television (ch. 3) and ESPN Fullcourt.
