COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Senior Deb Nelson set up a pair of first-half goals in a three-minute span, helping the University of Rhode Island women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory at Colorado College in the first game of the CC Invitational.
The victory - Rhody's second in as many games on the road - snapped Colorado College's 12-game home unbeaten streak. The win improves URI to 3-1-1 overall on the season.
"This was a great team effort and a real test of where our team is early in the season." head coach Zac Shaw said."
Dora Larusdottir got the Rams on the scoreboard in the 18th minute - her third goal of the season - from a pass from Nelson. Just over three minutes later, newcomer Adrienne Ruhe Lischke tallied her first collegiate goal, also on a pass from Nelson.
"We had good control in the first half. We created some chances and were able to capitalize twice, which was good to see." Shaw added. "I was happy for Adrienne, scoring her first goal, and Dora continues to play well on the offensive side of the field."
In the second half, Colorado College got on the board in the 52nd minute after a scramble in the box off a corner kick.
"It was a great defensive team effort tonight. Colorado College is a very good team and fought us really hard during the last 45 minutes." Shaw explained. "To be able to beat them on their home field - where they don't lose very often - and do it at altitude, I couldn't be happier with our effort."
Goalkeeper Jackie Fede played all 90 minutes between the pipes, allowing just one goal while tallying three saves.
For the game, Rhode Island outshot CC, 17-15. The host team attempted eight corner kicks to the Rams' four.
URI takes on No. 25 Marquette in the second game of the Colorado College Invitational on Sunday.
