KINGSTON, R.I. -- Jimmy Baron finished with 17 points and Parfait Bitee added 14 points, five rebounds and seven assists to lead Rhode Island past George Washington, 81-70.
Baron scored his 1,000th career point when he knocked down a 3-point shot at 3:04 of the first half. becoming the 46th University of Rhode Island player to reach the scoring milestone. Additionally, Baron became the 19th player in Division I history to score 1,000 career points while playing for his father. Click here for the full list.
Both teams began strong offensively, combining for 45 points through the first 10 minutes of play. Rhody led 25-20, after a free throw by Joe Mbang made it 25-20 with 10:06 left in the first half.
The Colonials went on a 13-3 run over the next five minutes, taking a 33-28 lead with 4:53 to play. But the Rams would counter with a 16-6 run to close the half, thanks to two Baron threes and seven points from Lamonte Ulmer - including two dunks. Rhode Island held a 44-39 advantage at half time.
After each team traded three-pointers to start the second half, it was Will Daniels' offensive spurt that helped break the game open for URI. The senior forward scored eight consecutive points - including two trifectas - over a two-minute span to give the Rams a 56-42 lead with 15:34 left in regulation.
Rhody forged their largest advantage of the night at 21 points, as a result of a 12-1 run midway through the second half. Joe Mbang connected on back-to-back threes, the second of which put Rhode Island up 72-51 with just under eight minutes to go.
Daniels and Mbang each had 13 points each for Rhode Island, while Keith Cothran added eight points and four boards. Lamonte Ulmer's stat line included eight points, nine rebounds, three assists, two blocked shots, and two steals.
For the game, URI connected on 10-of-22 from the perimeter (45.5%) and 23-of-29 from the charity stripe (79.3%).
Rhode Island returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 26 when it travels to Olean, N.Y. to face St. Bonaventure in an Atlantic 10 road matchup.
