PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Rhode Island men's basketball team dropped a 66-65 decision to Providence on Saturday afternoon at the Dunkin Donuts Center after senior guard Jimmy Baron's jumper rimmed out with five seconds remaining.
Two of the Rams three losses this season have been by three points or less.
Baron and fellow senior Kahiem Seawright each finished the game with 18 points. Baron opened the game with 16 first-half points, but was limited to just two points in the second half. Seawright scored 10 points in the second half.
Both URI seniors also combined for 14 rebounds to lead the Rams.
Junior forward Lamonte Ulmer also scored in double-figures for the Rams as he finished with a season-high 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting.
The first half featured 15 lead changes and neither team led by more than three points throughout the first 20 minutes.
Rhody took a 39-38 lead at the half, shooting 51.5 percent from the field, while Providence connected on 47.1 percent of its shots. URI also held a 21-14 advantage on the glass.
URI held PC without a field goal for the final 2:19 of the first half. PC's drought continued into the second half as the Rams held the Friars without a field goal for over three and a half minutes.
During that stretch, URI increased its lead to 45-38 with 17:03 to go in the game.
PC would regain the lead with just less than 10 minutes remaining at 52-51. URI quickly regained the lead and would go on to take a five-point lead with 3:04 to go in the game.
In the final three minutes, URI was outscored 10-4 as the Friars went on to victory.
Rhody returns to action at 7 p.m. on Tuesday night as they welcome New Hampshire to the Ryan Center.
