KINGSTON, R.I. - The University of Rhode Island softball team knocked off Brown University 3-2 in game one of Wednesday's non-conference doubleheader at the URI Softball Field. The Rams improved to 11-22 with the win while the Bears fell to 5-15.

The Rams broke through in the fourth for six hits and three runs to grab a 3-0 lead. Sophomore MaryBeth Ball (Clinton, Mass.) plated the first run of the game when she blooped a two-out single to right-center that scored classmate Melissa Wilson (Longview, Wash.). Senior Danielle Quimby (Lake Forest, Calif.) followed with a single to left to score sophomore Leah DiBussolo (East Norriton, Pa.) to make it 2-0 in favor of URI, and senior Shelly Peterson (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) dropped a single over short to score Ball and make it 3-0.

After leaving the bases loaded in the fifth, the Bears broke through in the seventh. Pinch hitter Emily Chaddock roped a double to center, and Brittany Lavine followed with a double to right-center to plate the Bears' first run of the afternoon. After URI senior Jill Anderson (Cohoes, N.Y.) retired the next two hitters, she walked Linnea Anderson (who was pinch-run for by SP Michelle Moses) and gave up a single to Kelsey Wilson singled through the left side to cut the URI lead to 3-2. Freshman Stacey Stanovich (Northbridge, Mass.) came on in relief and struck out Maria Macrina to close the game and earn her first-career save.

Anderson allowed nine hits and two runs over 6.2 IP and struck out five to earn her eighth win of the season. Moses took the loss for the Bears, allowing eight hits and three runs over six innings while striking out three.

The Rams and Bears were slated to play game two at 5 p.m.
