KINGSTON, R.I. -- Rhode Island got goals from Stephanie Santos and Kassandra Spitler in a 3-2 loss at home to Brown on Wednesday afternoon.
For Santos, it was her second goal of the season, while it marked the first of the 2009 campaign for Spitler.
In a match in which freshman goalkeeper Brooke Messier earned the first start of her collegiate career, 20 Rams saw significant action on the afternoon.
Brown began the scoring in the 16th minute. Marybeth Lesbirel took a Melissa Kim crossing pass from the left side and converted a shot from the top of the box, right side.
Later on in the first half, Santos tied it at 1-1. Ashley Evangelista set up the play, in which Santos dribbled between two Brown defenders and beat Bears' goalkeeper Brenna Hogue, point-blank. It was 1-1 at the break.
In the 56th minute, Kim and Lesbiral again combined for another Brown goal. Kim shot from about 15 yards out left side, off of the Lesbiral pass, making it 2-1.
Spitler would again tie it up, finding the back of the net at the 68:52 mark. Alexis Veith set up a touch pass to the senior, who beat Brown goalkeeper Steffi Yellin on the left side from about 10 yards out.
The Bears' Joyce Chun scored the gamewinner in the 89th minute, beating Messier one-on-one in the box. Gina Walker helped set up the score.
URI held a 13-12 advantage in shots, including a 7-4 edge in shots on-goal. Messier made one save in 90:00 of play, while Hogue stopped three shots in the first half, and Yellin saved two in the second half.
Rhody returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 17 when it travels to Amherst, Mass. to take on Massachusetts. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
