Box Score

KINGSTON, R.I. - The Rhode Island men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to St. Bonaventure, Friday night at the URI Soccer Complex. The loss drops URI's record to 6-8-1 (3-3-0) while the Bonnies improve to 8-6-0 (4-2-0).

St. Bonaventure got on the board first as Atlantic 10 leading scorer Sam Maheu sent a feed from Kevin Okapal into the back of the net for a 1-0 advantage, just over 33 minutes into the game.

Rhode Island evened things in the 77th minute when senior Gary Crooks (Falkirk, Scotland) sent a free kick into the box where freshman Thomas Lindroos (Espoo, Finland) went up against SBU goalkeeper David Flynn and headed the ball over Flynn to make it a 1-1 game.

The Bonnies, however, came back and scored again less than ten minutes later when Fabrizio Savarino capitalized on a Maheu cross for what proved to be the game-winner.

Rhody's best chance at knotting the score once more came in the final 30 seconds after Crooks sent a corner kick into the box where URI goalkeeper Chris Pennock (Spennymoor, England) headed a shot on goal which was pulled down by Flynn, ending the game in a 2-1 victory for St. Bonaventure.

Pennock finished the night with three saves for the Rams while Flynn blocked seven shots for the Bonnies.

As a team, URI held a 19-8 advantage in shots and a 10-2 edge in corner kicks.

The Rams return to the URI Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon when they play their final regular season home game vs. Duquesne at 1:30 p.m. Prior to the start of Sunday's game, URI will honor its four graduating seniors: Gary Crooks, Chris Pennock, Domenic Petrarca and Kevin Shaw. The action will also be televised - locally, via tape delay - on Cox Sports, Nov. 4 at 8 p.m.
