KINGSTON, R.I. - Senior forward
Lamonte Ulmer scored a team-high 16 points as the Rhode Island men's basketball team scored a 75-58 victory over Stony Brook, Tuesday evening at the Ryan Center.
Ulmer was one of four Rams who finished with 10-or-more points on the night as classmate fellow senior Keith Cothran, junior Will Martell and freshman Akeem Richmond finished with 15, 10 and 10 points, respectively.
Richmond's 10 points tied a career-high, while Martell's eight rebounds were a game-high.
The Rams (3-0) outshot Stony Brook 48.2-41.5 and forced the Seawolves into 21 turnovers.
The victory marked URI's 16th straight win over a non-conference. Over the past three-plus seasons under head coach Jim Baron, the Rams have posted a 42-20 record versus out-of-conference opponents.
In the first half, Rhody raced out 10-0 lead in the opening 3:32. Four of the Rams' eight points came off of Stony Brook turnovers. Rhody would then open its lead to 22-11 with just under seven and a half minutes to go in the first half.
URI took a 32-17 lead into the locker room. Stony Brook's 17 first-half points were the fewest by a Rhody opponent since Boston University tallied 14 on Nov. 29, 2005.
Stony Brook cut the Rhody lead to nine at 46-37 with 11:30 remaining in the second half. URI responded by reeling off 12 of the next 15 points to take a 58-40 lead. The Seawolves would not get within single digits for the remainder of the game.
Rhode Island returns to action on Saturday as it travels to Davidson for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
