The University of Rhode Island Men's Golf team (307-295-305=907) finished 20th at the Ron Smith Invitational held at Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club (par 72-7,152 yards).
Texas Tech and Florida Southern tied for first place at the tournament. Both teams compiled 858 strokes over the course of the three day tournament. Middle Tennessee State (861) and Louisville (862) were the next closest team finishers.
Individually, Brad Valois led Rhody. The Warwick native carded rounds of 73-72-74 over the three days. Valois finished tied for 39th overall. Mark Stevens concluded the event in a tie for 72nd. The senior shot rounds of 75-74-75, finishing at +8 overall. Taylor Fontaine, coming off his career low round of 67, fired a final round 79. Fontaine finished the tournament in a tie for 79th. Bill Forcier turned in a 77, while John Kelly carded a 79 to round out the Rhode Island lineup.
Texas Tech's Santiago Rivas and Florida Southern's Matt Stauch tied for first individually. Both players finished at nine-under 207 for the three rounds.
The Ron Smith Invitational was Rhode Island's second event of the spring. The team returns to action March 20-21 at the George Washington Invitational in Rehoboth Beach, Del.
