NEWPORT, R.I. -- The final round of the 2009 Adams Cup of Newport is complete, with SMU capturing the team title and Connecticut's Jeb Buchanan finishing at the top medalist.
The 16th Annual Adams Cup tournament took place under sunny skies at the Newport National G.C. (par 72 - 7,244 yards), from Sept. 21-22.
Freshman Ben Conway was the Rams' top finisher, tying for eighth place.  Conway - who competed as an individual - compiled a three-day total of 219.  The Tiverton, R.I. native carded even-par rounds of 72 on Monday's 36 holes of play.  In Tuesday's final round, Conway shot a 3-over par 75.
Patrick Pelletier finished in a tie for 31st place, with a total of 227.  Pelletier fired an even-par 72 in the final round, after carding a 78 and 77 on Monday.  Bill McDonald tied for 47th, with a three-day total of 227 (78-78-75).  McDonald shot a 75 on the final day of play.
Taylor Fontaine tied for 50th place, one stroke back of McDonald, at 232 (76-77-79).  John Kelly tied for 55th, with a 233 (79-77-77) and Cody Larson was 59th (79-74-81=234).
Two other URI golfers competed as individuals.  Branden Chicorka tied for 45th, with a total of 230 (74-78-78) and Jeffrey Ray was tied for 64th (82-80-73=235).
As a team, Rhode Island tied for 13th place, finishing with a total of 919.  The Rams closed out Adams Cup play with a team-best round of 303.    URI shot 311 and 305 on Monday's 36-hole opening day of competition.
SMU shot a three-day total of 876 (+12, 291-294-291), outlasting Georgia Southern (+18, 291-293-298=882) and New Mexico (+20, 287-296-301=884).
Buchanan took top individual honors after firing a 9-under 207, carding a 69 on each of his three rounds of play.  Georgia Southern's Ryan Zabroske was second, two shots back at 7-under (70-70-69=209).  SMU's Kelly Kraft finished third, with a 1-under total of 215 (69-76-70).
"While I'm disappointed in our team finish, I'm thrilled for Ben Conway who had a solid tourney in his first URI appearance," said head coach Tom Drennan.  "Our congratulations go to SMU, who will hopefully follow in the footsteps of last year's Adams Cup winner - and NCAA champion - Texas A&M.  Jeb Buchanan of UConn had a superb tournament, and we congratulate his efforts in winning the individual title."
Rhode Island returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 3 when it travels to New Haven, Conn. to compete in the MacDonald Cup, hosted by Yale.
