UNCASVILLE, Conn. - Junior
Delroy James posted a team-high 14 points and pulled down a team-best nine rebounds to lead the Rhode Island men's basketball team (11-1) to a 63-59 victory over Oklahoma State Saturday afternoon at Mohegan Sun Arena.
James was one of three players, who finished in double-digit scoring figures. Senior guard Keith Cothran and sophomore guard Stevie Mejia chipped in with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Rhody also out rebounded OSU 40-31 and held a 28-7 advantage in bench scoring.
Defensively, Rhody limited Oklahoma State to just 35.8 percent shooting and held the Cowboys to a season-low 59 points. Rhody also held Cowboy scoring leader James Anderson to just 10 points. Anderson entered the game as the Big 12's scoring leader, averaging 22.1 points per game.
Rhody came out firing to open the game as it opened up a 12-5 lead with 12 minutes remaining in the first half.
URI would then go on to open up a 12-point lead (19-7) with 8:48 to in the first half thanks to a layup by junior forward Ben Eaves. The Rams took a 35-26 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, Oklahoma State tied the game at 41 with 13 minutes to go in the game, which capped a 15-6 Cowboy run to open the second half.
Three minutes later, OSU took its first lead of the game at 44-41 thanks to a 3-pointer by Obi Muonelo. URI fought back to tie the game at 44 apiece with 8:23 remaining thanks to a 3-pointer by freshman forward Nikola Malesevic.
In the final eight minutes, Rhody outscored the Cowboys 19-15 with the lead changing hand seven times. In the final minute, Rhody held OSU scoreless to secure the win.
URI returns to action on Tuesday as it travels to Akron. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
