ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Rhode Island women's
volleyball team (11-9; 2-5 Atlantic 10) dropped a 3-1 decision to
Saint Louis despite a team-high 17 kills from junior Kayla Wilson Friday
night at Chaifetz Arena.
Wilson's 17 terminations tied a season-high. The California
native also had seven digs. Freshman Britta Baarstad
also chipped in offensively with 11 kills. Sophomore Annie Nelson dished
out a match-high 44 assists.
Defensively for the Rams, sophomore Ashley Tennant
tallied a match-high 24 digs. Nelson and sophomore Rachel Zarazan
also reached double-figures in digs with 12 and 11,
respectively.
Rhody jumped out to a 1-0 lead after it picked up a 25-22
victory in game one. The Rams outhit the Billikens .225-.175. Saint
Louis fought back to even the match at one game apiece, defeating
URI 25-17.
Saint Louis re-claimed the lead after in posted a 28-26 win in
game three. No team lead by more than four points. The Billikens
appeared to have the game well in hand down the stretch as they
lead 24-19, but Rhody stormed back by winning six straight points
to take a 25-24 lead. SLU responded as it claimed four of the next
five points to win the frame.
In game four, Rhody fell behind 10-5 in the early going. The
Rams were able to cut the Billikens' lead to two at 11-9 and again
at 13-11, but that was as close as URI would get in the frame. SLU
went on to win the game 25-19 and claim the match.
Rhody returns to action on Sunday as it heads to Pittsburgh to
take on Duquesne. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m.
