KINGSTON, R.I. - Charlotte scored the lone goal with just under seven minutes remaining in regulation to knock off the Rhode Island women's soccer team by a score of 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at the URI Soccer Complex.
With the win, Charlotte improves its record to 9-3 (2-0 A-10), while the Rams fall to 1-8-1 (1-1 A-10).
Rhode Island had their first scoring chance with 20 minutes remaining in the first half as senior Kaylen Shimoda crossed the ball from the right side following a URI corner kick. However, Rhody was unable to get a head on the cross and the 49ers were able to clear.
URI had another scoring chance later in the first half as senior Adrienne Ruhe Lischke took an open shot from just outside the box that was stopped by Charlotte keeper Natalie LaVigne.
The 49ers out shot Rhody 5-2 in the opening half.
The Rams had back-back scoring chances with just over 20 minutes remaining in regulation time as sophomore Ashley Evangelista deflected a shot that snuck just left of the goal post. Moments later, Ruhe Lischke took a shot from about 35-yards out that sailed just above the cross bar.
Following numerous scoring chances of their own, Charlotte finally capitalized and netted the game-winner with just under seven minutes remaining in regulation. Jonna Handra split the URI defense after receiving a pass from Sam Huecker. With Handra needing only the keeper to beat, she sent her shot in the upper-right portion of the net to beat Rhody keeper Sasha Reiber
For the game, Charlotte out shot the Rams 11-4 as Reiber made four saves for URI.
Rhode Island is back action on Friday, Oct. 8th as they travel to Dayton, Ohio to take on the Flyers in an A-10 Conference match. Game time is slatted for 7:00 p.m.
