Britta Baarstad had a team-best 14 kills, but it was not enough as the Rhode Island women's volleyball team (11-7; 2-3 Atlantic 10) fell to George Washington Friday night at Keaney Gymnasium.
Baarstad's 14 kills marked the eighth time this season she has posted a double-digit kill performance.
Teammates Kayla Wilson and Rachel Zarazan also chipped in offensively with 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Defensively for the Rams, Wilson and sophomore Ashley Tennant tallied 19 digs apiece.
Rhody downed the Colonials 25-19 to take an early 1-0 lead. The Rams outhit the Colonials .375-.167. In game two, GW charged back to even the match at one game apiece thanks to a 25-19 victory.
In the third game, both teams traded points and were tied at nine points apiece, but the Colonials pulled away as they reeled off 11 of the next 12 points to take 20-10 lead. GW went on to win the set 25-14, outhitting Rhody .333-.091.
Rhody jumped out to a 7-4 lead to open the fourth set, but the Colonials stormed back to even the frame at 14 apiece. The Rams responded as they went on to win the next four points to take an 18-14 advantage. URI would then go on to secure the win as it claimed seven of the next 12 points to force a fifth game.
In the fifth game, URI jumped out to an early 6-4 advantage, but the Colonials fought back to take a 12-9 lead. GW would then go on to win three of the next five points to claim the set and the match.
The Rams return to action on Sunday as they welcome Charlotte. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m. inside Keaney Gymnasium
