WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Senior Matt Hansen had a
career-high 20 tackles, but it was not enough as the Rhode Island
football team (2-3; 1-1 CAA) dropped a 26-7 decision Saturday night
at Zable Stadium.
Offensively for the Rams, sophomore Ayo Isijola led the
way with 56 yards rushing and one touchdown. Isijola's touchdown
was his first of the season. Junior wide receiving Anthony
Baskerville also chipped in offensively with a career-high 51
yards receiving.
The Tribe opened the scoring in the second quarter thanks to
37-yard field goal by kicker Drake Kuhn. Kuhn's field goal capped a
nine-play, 59-yard drive. Four minutes later, William and Mary
struck again, only this time it ended its drive with a touchdown.
Tribe quarterback Michael Paulus found wide receiver Ryan Moody in
the back of the endzone for a 17-yard hookup.
William and Mary would then go on to increase its lead to 13
points with 4:12 to go in the first half as Kuhn drilled a 19-yard
field goal. The field goal was set up following a URI fumble.
Rhody quickly responded to the Tribe's field goal with a 20-yard
touchdown run by Isijola. The Rams' drive lasted just 58 seconds
and covered 54 yards. Freshman running back Travis Hurd put the
Rams in great field position as he returned the ball out to the URI
46-yard line.
Heading into the locker room, Rhody trailed 13-7. The Tribe
outgained URI 184-115 in total offense.
Rhody had golden opportunity to take the lead in the third
quarter as it had the ball first and goal on the Tribe 10-yard
line, but the drive stalled after the Rams turned the ball over on
downs, ending a 12-play, 81-yard drive.
In the fourth quarter, William and Mary increased its lead to
19-7 thanks to a 19-play, 97-yard drive, which spanned 8:15
seconds. Three minutes later, the Tribe returned to the endzone to
make the score 26-7, which secured the win.
Rhody returns to action next week as it heads to Newark, Del.,
to take on the No. 2/2-ranked Delaware Blue Hens. Kickoff is set
for 3:30 p.m.
