Feb. 28, 2010

Box Score

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Rhode Island senior Oliver Palmer went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs and two RBI as the Rams were downed by No. 1 Virginia, 8-5, on Sunday at Davenport Field.

As a team, Rhody collected 10 hits on the afternoon while the top-ranked Cavaliers finished with nine.

UVa (6-1) wasted little time getting on the board, plating five runs in its first trip to the plate and building an 8-0 lead after five innings.

Rhody (0-6) came back in the top of the sixth, as senior Rob DeVeney led off with a double to right center and then scored on a double by Palmer. Sophomore Mike LeBel followed with his first home run of the season - a two-run shot over the left field fence - to make the score 8-3.

The Rams plated two more in the top of the eighth - on Palmer's lead-off homer and sophomore Milan Adams' two-out RBI single that sent junior Tom Coulombe across the plate.

That was as close as URI would get though, as the Cavaliers held on for the win.

Senior starter Dan Rossignol was charged with the loss, giving up seven runs (three earned) on five hits and four walks in 2.1 innings. Junior Brian Bodjiak came on in the bottom of the third and allowed two hits and one run over the next 2.2 innings. Classmates Gardner Leaver (two innings) and Dan Johnson (one inning) finished off the game for URI, giving up one hit apiece.

Cody Winarski got the win for the Cavaliers.

The Rams return to action on Saturday, March 6 when they travel to Winter Haven, Fla. to take on Maine at 1:30 p.m.
