Rhody Falls to Binghamton and Saint Francis

DOVER, Del. - The Rhode Island softball team (5-11) dropped a pair of games in the first day of the Delaware State Tournament on Saturday as it fell to Binghamton (3-1) and Saint Francis (Pa) (2-0).

In game one against Binghamton, the Bearcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top half of the first inning, but the Rams fought back in the bottom half in the frame to tie the game at one run apiece.

Freshman Erika Szymanski scored the Rams' only run of the game as she came in from third after senior Jackie Kampemeier reached first on a fielding error.

Binghamton re-claimed the lead in the fourth as it scored one run. The Bearcats increased their lead to two in the sixth as they added another run to secure the win.

Sophomore Jayshree Narendran took the loss after she went 7.0 innings. Narendran struck out 10 and only walked three batters.

In the second game, Rhody was shutout despite outhitting St. Francis 5-4.

St. Francis took the lead in the bottom half of the third as it plated one run. The Red Flash added another run in the sixth to secure the win.

Szymanski took the loss after she came on in relief of starter Alison Hartzell.

Rhody returns to action on Sunday as it takes on tournament host Delaware State. First pitch is set for 11:30 a.m.
