Golf Roundup: Rhode Island Open Underway; Results from around New England

KINGSTON, R.I. -- Ten players with URI golf ties are competing in the 79th Rhode Island Open, held at Quidnessett C.C. (par 72, 6,940 yards).

Tournament play begins on Wednesday, July 28 with an 18-hole round of play. The top 42 players, plus ties, make the cut to the 36-hole final round to be held on Thursday, July 29.

The final round of 76th Connecticut Open is underway at the Country Club of Fairfield. Two 18-hole rounds were contested on Monday, July 26 and Tuesday, July 27 with a 40 player cut (including ties).

Current Rhody golfers Branden Chicorka and Bill McDonald each advanced to the final round.

Taylor Fontaine tied for eighth at the 81st New England Amateur Championship, held July 20-22 at the Course at Yale in New Haven.

The field completed two 18-hole rounds on July 20-21, before the top 40 (including ties) advanced to a 36-hole final day of competition on July 22.

Fontaine finished with a 2-under par total of 208, carding an opening round 70, followed by back-to-back rounds of 69 on days two and three.

Alum Jonathan Pannone tied for 12th (65-72-73=210, Even) while senior Patrick Pelletier tied for 34th (68-74-74=216, +6). Incoming freshman Andrew Fiorenzano tied for 38th (70-72-75=217, +7).

Senior Patrick Pelletier won the stroke play portion of the 2010 New Hampshire State Amateur Championship, held July 12-17 at the Eastman Golf Links in Grantham, N.H.

Pelletier carded a 2-under total of 141, firing an opening round of 72, followed by a second round 69. He was the only golfer under par through the 36 holes of stroke play action.

In the match play rounds, Pelletier won his round of 64 (3 and 2) and round of 32 (4 and 3) matchups, before falling, 5 and 4, in the round of 16.

Three players with URI golf ties competed in the sectional qualifying round for the 110th U.S. Amateur Championship. The one day, 36-hole tournament was held at Potowomut C.C. (par 71, 6,380 yards) in East Greenwich.

Alum Jonathan Pannone was fifth overall, firing a 2-over total of 144. He shot a pair of 72's in both the morning and afternoon sessions.

Sophomore Jeffrey Ray was tied for eighth place. Ray, who advanced to the match play rounds of the 105th R.I. Amateur Championship on July 8, shot back-to-back rounds of 73 for a 4-over total of 146.

Brad Valois, who played for Rhode Island from 2008-09, was tied for 21st (73-77=150, +8). Incoming freshman Jared Adams finished tied for 37th (76-78=154, +12).

Five past and present URI golfers advanced to the match play round of the 105th R.I. Amateur Championship.

The tournament was held at Wannamoisett C.C. from July 6-10 and featured 14 golfers with Rhody ties.

Bill McDonald fell, 7 and 6, in his first round match, while Jeffrey Ray fell, 4 and 3, in his round of 32 match.

Alums Paul Quigley (2 and 1), Ben Tuthill (5 and 4), and Bill Forcier (3 and 2) advanced to the round of 16.

Quigley (3 and 1) and Tuthill (1 up) advanced to the semifinal round, facing off against each other, with Tuthill moving onto the championship match, 2 up. He fell, 8 and 6, to winner Garrett Medeiros.
