HAMILTON, N.Y. - The Rhode Island women's
volleyball team opened its 2010 season on a high note as it downed
Fairfield 3-1 in its first match of the Colgate Classic Friday
afternoon at Cotterell Court.
Rhody outhit Fairfield .289-.133 and held a 37-32 advantage on
set assists.
Sophomore Rachel Zarazan led
the way offensively for the Rams as she totaled a career-high 17
kills. Fellow sophomore Annie Nelson also
chipped in as she had 28 assists.
Defensively for the Rams, freshman Jill Anderson made
a strong debut as she had a match-high 11 blocks, while Nelson
paced the squad with 11 digs.
Rhody captured sets one (25-20) and two (25-23), but fell in the
third set (25-23). URI closed out the Stags in game four with a
25-6 victory.
The Rams return to action later this afternoon as they take on
tournament host Colgate at 4 p.m.
