NEWPORT, R.I. -- Rhode Island finished in 10th place after the final round of action at the 17th Annual Adams Cup of Newport.
The Adams Cup is a 54-hole tournament and is being contested at Newport National G.C. (par 72 - 7244 yards). The 17-team field (88 golfers) played 36 holes on Monday, Sept. 20 and finished up play with an 18-hole final round on Tuesday, Sept. 21.
The Rams shot a final round of total of 309 on Tuesday. URI went 302 and 301 for a total of 603 through the first 36 holes of action.
Ben Conway led the way for the Rams, tying for 14th overall in the tournament. He shot a three-round total of 223 (+7). Conway shot his best score of the tournament on the final day, carding a 1-over 73. He posted scores of 74 and 76 on Monday.
Branden Chicorka tied for 27th, with a three-round total of 227. After opening with a first round 75, the sophomore followed with back-to-back rounds of 76 in the second and third rounds.
John Kelly tied for 49th place. He opened with a 2-over 74 on Monday morning and finished with a three round score of 233 (74-80-79). Patrick Pelletier tied for 52nd place (79-74-81=234), posting a 2-over 74 during Monday's afternoon session. Taylor Fontaine finished in 73rd place (82-75-83=240).
URI also had three golfers competing individually. Bill McDonald carded rounds of 77, 79, and 80 - good for a total of 236 and a tie for 58th place. Jeffrey Ray tied for 70th place (79-78-82=239), while Andrew Fiorenzano tied for 77th (81-78-84=243).
Central Florida, coached by URI golf alum Bryce Wallor, took the team title, with a total of 868 (295-286-287). West Florida (298-29-296=886) finished second, followed by Central Connecticut in third (300-298-295=893).
UCF's Greg Eaton took individual medalist honors at the 17th Annual Adams Cup of Newport. After a first round 74, Eason carded consecutive rounds of 69 and 71 - good for a total of 214.
Rhode Island returns to action at the Hartford Hawks Invitational from Sept. 27-28 at the Bull's Bridge G.C. in South Kent, Conn.
