KINGSTON, R.I. - The Rhode Island women's volleyball team (11-3; 2-0 Atlantic 10) continued its strong start to the 2010 season as it won its eighth-consecutive match, defeating La Salle 3-0 Saturday afternoon at Keaney Gymnasium.
The Rams 2-0 start to their conference schedule marks the first time they have won their first two league matches since 1999. URI's eight-match winning streak is its longest since 2001 when the squad won 10 in-a-row.
URI's 3-0 victory over La Salle is its third straight sweep victory.
Sophomore Rachel Zarazan led the way offensively with nine kills on .444 hitting. Freshman Britta Baarstad also chipped in with eight terminations.
Rhody opened the match with a decisive 25-17 victory. The Rams outhit the Explorers .609-.042. In the second frame, Rhody downed La Salle 25-15, outhitting La Salle .500-.120. In the final set, Rhody completed the sweep as it claimed a 25-21 victory.
Rhody returns to action on next weekend as it travels to Ohio for a pair of matches against Dayton (Oct. 1) and Xavier (Oct. 2).
